In fact, it was a sadistic, anomic bloodbath and iconoclasm, the inevitable result of the Enlightenment, of reason divorced from faith, incited by Freemasonry and the secularist zeitgeist. A valiant few—led by such giants as Jacques Cathelineau, Charles de Bonchamps, and Henri de la Rochejaquelein—staged a resistance, particularly in the Vendée, in western France.
